얀테의 법칙은 북유럽사람이 삶을 살아가는 사회규범, 관습이자 불문율 같은 삶의 철학이다. 덴마크계 노르웨이 작가인 악셀 산데모세가 1933년에 쓴 소설 '도망자'에 등장하는 가상마을 '얀테'를 소개하면서 지어진 법칙이다.
악셀 산데모세는 10가지 규칙을 언급했지만 사실 한 가지 의미를 다양하게 묘사한 것이다. 스스로 특별하다고 생각하거나 더 낫다고 생각해서는 안 된다.
1. Du skall inte tro att du är något.
You are not to think you are anything special.
당신이 특별하다고 생각하지 마라.
2. Du skall inte tro att du är lika god som vi.
You are not to think you are as good as us.
당신이 남들보다 좋은 사람이라고 생각하지 마라.
3. Du skall inte tro att du är klokare än vi.
You are not to think you are smart than us.
당신이 남들보다 똑똑하다고 생각하지 마라.
4. Du skall inte inbilla dig att du är bättre än vi.
You are not to convince yourself that you are better than us.
당신이 남들보다 낫다고 생각하지 마라.
5. Du skall inte tro att du vet mer än vi.
You are not to think you know more than us.
당신이 남들보다 많이 안다고 생각하지 마라.
6. Du skall inte tro att du är förmer än vi.
You are not to think you are more important than us.
당신이 남들보다 중요하다고 생각하지 마라.
7. Du skall inte tro att du duger till något.
You are not to think you are good at anything.
당신이 모든 일을 잘한다고 생각하지 마라.
8. Du skall inte skratta åt oss.
You are not to laugh at us.
남들을 비웃지 마라.
9. Du skall inte tro att någon bryr sig om dig.
You are not to think anyone cares about you.
누군가 당신을 걱정하리라 생각하지 마라.
10. Du skall inte tro att du kan lära oss något.
You are not to think you can teach us anything.
